Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe (1966-2024)
These last few weeks have been painful for me with the loss of a loved one: my mentor.
Herbert was a visionary. See the big picture, bigger, always bigger was his motto. He dreamed of a stronger, richer, and brighter Africa. He succeeded in 20 years to transform a small bank to an international and reputable group.
Herbert was a builder. One of the last projects was the construction of the Wigwe University in Nigeria, with the participation of the eminent professor Hakeem Belo Osagie (whom I had the opportunity to meet at Harvard Business School). This university was dedicated to reduce the burden of Nigerian families sending children abroad to get high quality education. He invested 500 millions USD for this project in Port Harcourt.
Herbert was a humble man, a good father and husband, proud to show off his family’s photos and successes. He was also collecting and promoting African arts.
Herbert had a thirst for knowledge. Preparing for the bar exam in England in addition to all his distinctions and qualifications as a banker (CEO of Access Bank group), he also learned a few words of French given its business ties with France (he was appointed in 2023 Head of France-Nigeria investment Club, FNIC).
Herbert was my friend. He always had time to respond to messages and calls despite a tight schedule when traveling around the world in a record time. Rich in human qualities, listening and advising were part of his DNA as a mentor.
I remember this phrase from him: “success is a meaningless word without failure. I have failed many times, but in every wrong turn, every misstep, there are important lessons to learn. Embrace them »
Herbert will be missed not only in Nigeria but in France, in Africa and in the World. Being inspired by such a giant gave the opportunity to understand the personal and professional challenges of a great leader.
RIP Herbert!
Your friend forever, Vanessa.
